St Catherine's Catholic Primary School

Class 1

November 2024

This month we have been very busy, Pumpkin Week, Hedgehog Week, French Day, learning about St. Catherine, painting poppies, creating Nativity displays and Crib Blessings... as well as our daily learning, exploring and investigating!

YEAR 1: Year 1 have completed their first Science topic - Animals Including Humans. In this unit we learned about human and animal bodies, considering differences and similarities. The children engaged in a variety of activities including drawing and labelling the body, using their senses to conduct a survey, describe animal bodies and sort animals into groups.

October 2024

The children have enjoyed moving around the different classes learning about life in France, history and French culture.

September 2024

Welcome to Class 1 for our new Reception and welcome back Year 1!

July 2024

Well done to all of our wonderful Reception children! This week they painted portraits for their Year 6 Buddies, wrote thank you messages and presented their gifts during our Leaver's Mass. We have celebrated their successes and strengths during parent meetings and their wonderful Learning Journey books have gone home - to be treasured!

June 2024

Our school trip to Maryport Aquarium and Allonby beach - we had an amazing day!

May 2024: we have had lots of different weather this month, sunshine, hot spells and even torrential rain! However, the Reception children always love water play, their experimenting and investigating leads to lots of mathematical play. We have also taken part in our May Procession, taking flowers to the statue of Mary and celebrated Pentecost.

Today we had a visit from Mrs. Dent and baby Ava

April 2024: during Seed Week we have been planting seeds in our garden, investigating seeds in fruits and vegetables and creating pictures. We have been outside in the beautiful sunshine, made patterns in nature, measured length and height as well as creating Pentecost artwork for our R.E. display.

March 2024: we have been vegetable printing, visiting the Library Van, celebrating World Book Day, investigating Science Week, learning fencing skills and playing football with Shaun @ No7 Coaching. This week we explored Holy Week, doing lots of crafts, working in our House groups and eating hot cross buns!

February: We enjoyed our tractor visit, even sitting in the driving seat! We have been playing hockey, baking bread (reading the instructions by ourselves) and learning about the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe, inspiring us to paint large scale spring flowers and an oil pastel study which are displayed in the hall.

January 2024: Happy New Year! We have been exploring shapes in the ice, making junk models, acting out the story of Jesus presented at the temple, noticing growing shoots all over our garden, snow writing and lots more!

December 2023: making snow angels; Nativity pictures and models; building snowmen; performing the Nativity story; the Reindeer charity run; Christmas dinner and lots of festive fun! 

November 2023: we have tasted a pomegranate, in Pumpkin Week we explored and investigated, we created our own poppies for Remembrance, all of the children have baked bread and found different leaves in Leaf Week.

November: today we had our Buddy Coffee Morning after Year 6 Assembly for Anti Bullying Week

October: we have been to our school Harvest Mass, created house shields in our house groups. Also, model making, construction, playing basketball and body-boarding in P.E.

September: Welcome to Class 1 - we have been very busy learning new routines, making friends and meeting our Year 6 Buddies. We have had visits from the Police, the Fire-brigade, a vet and the Blood-bikes. We have had a skateboarding lesson and had P.E. with Mr. French

July 2023: We had an amazing trip to The World of Beatrix Potter in Windermere

June 2023: we have had Bee Week, investigated our 'blooming' garden and created a Joseph and his Coat display for class

May 2023: Celebrating the King's Coronation and our annual May Procession for Mary

April 2023: We have enjoyed adding to our Nature Notebook by drawing our beautiful tulips and Prayer Bear has new things to explore in his overnight bag.

February 2023: this month we have had Storytelling Week, been building outdoors, made mountain pictures and models in Mountain Week. We are writing lots more in free play, baking bread and made sketches of the snowdrop bulbs before planting them.

January: Happy New Year! We have been using our mathematical learning and vocabulary whilst baking buns; created block bridges and bowling alleys; smudging oil pastels to create our new hall display and our own designed rainbow pictures. In phonics we are learning to read 'ch', 'sh' and 'ee' sounds and had great fun exploring the snow and ice. This week we created art in Hibernation Week and also learned about other faiths and places of worship around the world.

December: It has been so cold this month! but luckily we are super warm in class. We have made fantastic poinsettia Christmas cards by printing paint and have learned about winter birds in Robin Week. We also had Christmas dinner and jumper day. To end our term we performed in our Nativity and Santa visited too! Merry Christmas.

November: We had done such a lot this month! Patterns and counting, taking Prayer Bear home, writing our names, Fire Safety Week, icing biscuits for our Buddy Coffee Afternoon, Poppies, rainy day play, Hedgehog Week and a visit from PC Norman about road safety.

October: We have visited the library, added more Numberblocks, been writing our names and we have enjoyed Pumpkin week! In R.E. Mrs Grice wrote all of the things that we are thankful for on our Thankful Pumpkin. Then we investigated inside the pumpkin!

September has been a busy month! We learned about the changing seasons and looking out for signs of Autumn coming.

September 2022: the children have settled into school life very quickly and already learning so much!
