Class 3 trip

Class 3 had a ‘grand’ day out at Maryport Aquarium yesterday.  The children watched an informative clip about the destruction of sea kelp, narrated by David Attenborough (who they're writing a biography about) and then looked at all the beautiful fish and sea creatures housed in the aquarium.

Lunch was followed by an extremely fun and exciting play on the playground outside.  We finished the day with a litter pick on the beach at Allonby, as part of our topic on pollution and climate change.

It was a brilliant day and the children of Class 3 really showed superb teamwork and camaraderie during the course of the day.  Mrs Jones was extremely proud!

A grand day out!

COMPUTING - we have been learning about how digital devices can help us. We drew a picture and tried to copy the picture onto a paint programme on the IPad. We're going to evaluate how successful we were!

What an amazing lesson we had about the 'DIGESTIVE SYSTEM' in Science - the children were amazed and disgusted, but really learned a lot!

Visit to Castle Park

Class 3 had a super morning meeting Joanna from English Heritage at Castle Park. We learned all about the history of the castle and that King Richard III lived there for a short time until his death in battle. We learned lots about this fascinating landmark of Penrith and the children had great fun asking Joanna all about the horrific aspects of castle life in the past.

Class 3

What fun we had on World Book Day!

In class, we watched a 'Footy and Booky Quiz' on-line with the National Literacy Trust.  The children loved the multiple choice quiz.

After play, we had a lesson called 'Book Choice Bistro' which explains how children choose a book which is at their level.  Miss Campbell and I then served the children in the class bistro with their choice of book from the menu.  They also had biscuits and bread sticks whilst they perused the menu.

We then had our own book quiz to guess well-known characters in different genres of books.

Our costumes were amazing!

Class 3 - 'COMMUNITY' Assembly

Class 3 have been learning about the importance of ‘Community’ in their RE lessons.  This learning was brought together in a beautiful assembly this afternoon.  The children acted out the roles of people in the church community and also dressed up in the communities that they are involved in. For example, Razzamataz and Karate.

Their poetry was read beautifully and the assembly ended with a lovely rendition of the song, ‘Family of God’

A wonderful topic showcased by the children of Class 3.

SAFER INTERNET WEEK

The whole school enjoyed 'Safer Internet Week' during the last week of term.  Safer Internet day actually took place on the 6th of February 2024, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’.

Our learning throughout the week focused on;

  • Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology
  • Using the internet to make change for the better
  • The changes young people want to see online
  • The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline

We even wrote prayers thanking God for the wonderful advances in technology and designed posters giving advice on how to be safe on the internet.

Each class shared their learning during an informative parent's assembly on Friday morning.

A Detective from Cumbria Constabulary, Lee Clark will be coming to talk to the older children on Friday 1st March, 2024 re further issues around internet safety.

SCIENCE - ELECTRICITY

We have been enjoying our science topic of electricity this afternoon.

Our challenge was to work out if it was a circuit or not, when Mrs Jones showed us different cards. As a scientist, we had to predict if the circuit would work or not prior to the testing.

It was great fun testing the different elements of a simple circuit. We even used a propeller in the circuit and got it to spin.

We also learned that there are scientific symbols when drawing a circuit and played games to guess what they were!

The Jesse Tree - Advent Display

We have been learning about the Jesse tree in our RE lessons.

The Jesse Tree is a way of telling the story of God's plan from the beginning of time to redeem His people by sending a Saviour. It follows the lineage of Christ's family and key people in the Old Testament that God uses to tell His story from Creation through Christ's birth.

We made individual ornaments to tell the different parts of the story. We also wrote the part of scripture referring to the ornament.

The Jesse tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: “A shoot shall come out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.”

Through repetition, the class were able to learn 4 songs throughout the day.  They even helped Joe to write 2 new verses for a song about Cumbria and the Lake District.

The children had great fun thinking up actions to match the lyrics of the songs.

Class 3 performed their songs beautifully to the rest of the school and a selection of parents at the end of the day.

Super effort Class 3!

Anti-bullying Week

Following Year 6's exciting assembly on Monday, we have been 'Making A Noise About Bullying' which is the theme for this year.

We decorated 'trainers' to show how we are going to stamp out bullying.  Also, we designed our own odd socks to show how unique we all are!

Science - ROCKS

We have been Learning about rocks in our science lessons. Today we carried out fair tests on a selection of rocks to see if they were; permeable or non-permeable and also to test the hardness of the rocks.

We learned that rocks can be sorted into different categories -

Wise King Solomon – Proverbs

We have been learning about King Solomon in our RE lessons.   Solomon is credited for his contributions to the Bible, especially the book of Proverbs.

A proverb is a short, popular saying that contains a piece of wisdom or advice. It uses figurative language to convey its message, rather than stating its meaning literally.

We worked in groups to decide how to use some of the advice from Proverbs in our daily lives.

We played a matching game in groups too.

Our own Proverbs that we wrote are absolutely amazing!

SCIENCE

Handwashing and Respiratory Workshop

Class 3 enjoyed a handwashing and respiratory workshop with Shannon Irving, who is the Technical Officer for Public Health & Public Protection at Westmorland & Furness Council.

We found out lots about microbes and how they can make us feel very poorly.  We carried out an experiment to see how far a 'sneeze' can travel through the air if not stopped in its tracks (for example catching it in a tissue or sneezing into your sleeve).

Some children washed their hands in a substance that shows up all the germs under a ultra-violet light.  It was amazing to see if we don't wash our hands correctly then the germs are still obvious on our hands.

Did you know that you have to wash your hands for 20 seconds and sing 'Happy Birthday' twice through, then your hands hopefully will be lovely and clean?

A Grand Day Out at Walby Farm Park

Class 3 enjoyed a grand day out at Walby Farm Park on the 10th July.

We went in two play areas, petted the guinea pigs and rabbits, bet on a ferret race and had a tractor ride around the park.

The goat race was a lot of fun, as was the barrel ride!

The weather even stayed fine for us!

TIME - YEAR 4

The Year 4 children are currently learning about ‘TIME’ in their maths lessons – analogue and digital times, including the 24 hour clock.

Please help your child to practise this tricky concept.  I’ve put some websites below to support learning.  The children will also be given some time homework next week.

I found with my own children that purchasing a very reasonably priced ‘training watch’ from Amazon or Argos helped tremendously with learning what can be a very tricky concept.

'800 Years of Penrith Markets' Project with Penrith Museum

Class 3 children went to Penrith Museum on Wednesday and Thursday of this week to work with Karen MacDougall on an exciting new art project, '800 Years of Penrith Markets'

We found out that the history of Penrith Market dates back to 1223, when King Henry III granted the Market Charter.

We had an exciting activity to find different objects and dates in the museum by searching the galleries and completing a paired worksheet activity.

Then, we completed timeline activities to re-arrange old photographs of Penrith into date order.  Also, we used a replica of Penrith's town seal to stamp Playdoh and an embossing stamp to put a mark on paper.

Our project was to complete pieces of art work which will hopefully be displayed on a custom made banner to display in the town.  The artwork included; old buildings, livestock, people through the ages, oak trees (which the stalls were made out of) and artefacts.

Photographs to follow.

Please look out for the banner in the town which will appear in due course!

States of Matter - Science Week in Class 3

The children have enjoyed their week so far, learning about the three 'States of Matter,' which are solids, liquids and gases.

We've classified materials into solids and liquids and explained their properties.  We've also learned about different gases and carried out numerous experiments and then made instructions for others to follow.

Today, we've learned that all materials can change their state at different points.

What a great time we're having so far!

The January Challenge 2023

We enjoyed a visit from Claire from the library today. We completed some activities from the January Challenge Champions pack.

We thought about; what we are thankful for and what we see on the way to school. We also drew our favourite piece of clothing and asked our parents what their favourite childhood memory of clothing was.

It was a lovely session!

Visit to Penrith Library - Helen Haraldsen (Author) Workshop

We went to Penrith Library on Friday 7th October, to meet Helen Haraldsen, who we have been working with since we won her lovely book 'A Tale of Two Shoes'

Helen talked about her book and then we wrote some free verse poetry or prose based on the environment and the two characters out of the book, Shane and Sheila shoe.

The children also had the opportunity to purchase Helen's books and were presented with them on the day.

It was a lovely experience to meet a 'real author'  We are still continuing English lessons based on this book, which we have found very exciting.

Thanks to Claire and Vicky at the library for their continuing support!

Author Workshop - Helen Haraldsen

National Poetry Day

Class 3 enjoyed National Poetry Day.  We listened to lots of poem to get us into the mood.  We also read some 'Pocket Poems' outside with a partner.  They were written by famous poets like, R.L. Stevenson and Enid Blyton.

We then wrote our own descriptive poetry about Autumn using the format; adjective, noun, verb and adverb.  It was tricky but we got there, with lots of different versions!

Class 3 are Winners

Claire from Penrith Library entered Class 3 into a competition over the summer holidays, which we fortunately won!

We are going to have the opportunity to work with a local author, Helen Haraldsen and focus on her book, 'A Tale of Two Shoes'

We even got a free copy of the book presented to us from Claire at the library.

What exciting news!
