Writing in EYFS

At St Catherine's, we use high quality, engaging texts and resources to develop children’s love for writing and to see themselves as writers.

Our children begin their writing journey through a balance of play, exploration, and structured teaching. Mark-making, drawing, and early attempts at writing are encouraged every day, helping children see themselves as writers from the very start.

We focus on developing the key building blocks for writing:

  • Speaking and Listening – building vocabulary through talk, stories, songs, and rhymes.

  • Fine Motor Skills – strengthening hands through play, mark-making, and practical activities.

  • Phonics – giving children the knowledge of sounds and letters they need to begin writing words.

As children progress, they are introduced to the CUSP Writing approach. Teachers provide high-quality modelling and share engaging texts that inspire early writing. Children are encouraged to write in provision with purpose, beginning with simple words and sentences and gradually developing into more confident, independent writers.

By the end of the Early Years, children are ready to build on these strong foundations as they move into Key Stage 1 and continue their journey with the full CUSP Writing curriculum.

Writing tools and resources are embedded within all areas of the EYFS classrooms to provide children with early opportunities of mark making through play based situations as soon as they start their learning journey.
